What is the Drug Quiz Show?
|
Each year the show challenges more than 30,000 adolescents statewide to test their knowledge of alcohol and other drugs during a game show style competition. The annual Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show strives to heighten school/home/community substance abuse awareness by providing middle school students with the opportunity to have fun, while gaining the knowledge, skills and self-confidence needed to make safe, healthy, real-life choices regarding the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
The competition is open to students in 5th to 8th grades who compete for the regional title with that winner moving on to the New York State Regional playoff in Syracuse, NY. Among the schools in Herkimer County that have participated in past years are Little Falls, Mohawk, Frankfort-Schuyler, Ilion, Dolgeville, Mt. Markham, Poland and Town of Webb.
The competition starts several months prior at the local school level when schools register and receive learning center materials provided by the Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show containing information to study from about tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. Each participating school forms a team with as many as 7 members- 4 designated players and 3 alternates. Teams usually study up to the day of the competition. In Herkimer County, the competition has been held during the month of March at Herkimer County Community College.
The regional quiz show has been sponsored for the past 7 years by the Herkimer County Prevention Council of Catholic Charities of Herkimer County. Participating teams earn prizes donated by local businesses. All officials for the game show, moderators, judges, mediators and score keepers are local volunteers.
